Here is a raglan knitting pattern that I have written using programming to produce a pattern that should produce a garment knit to your size specifications.
This pattern produces a bottom up knit in pieces raglan sweater.
Input measurements and gauge below to generate the pattern.
This pattern was originally written to be made on a knitting machine without a ribber. However the numbers should work and you should be able to make a sweater from this by using hand knitting. This would be knit entirely in stockinette stitch (Knit one row and then purl the next)
This pattern is not written for beginners. Some level of experience on knitting jumpers and assembling is assumed.
Measurements
Please input the following measurements, rounded to the whole cm
Gauge
It is advisable to block your swatch before measuring
Knitting the Front
Cast on stitches
Knit for rows. (cm)
Bind off stitches at the start of the next 2 rows
Knit for a total rows. On rows decrease 1 stitch
on either end of row
stitches left
Put remaining stitches onto scrap yarn
Knitting the Back
Cast on stitches
Knit for rows. ( cm)
Bind off stitches at the start of the next 2 rows
Knit for a total rows. On rows decrease 1 stitch
on either end of row
stitches left
Put remaining stitches onto scrap yarn
Knitting the Sleeves - Knit 2 of the following
Cast on stitches
Knit for a total rows.
stitches left
Bind off stitches at the start of the next 2 rows
Knit for a total rows. On rows decrease 1 stitch
on
either end of row
stitches left
Put remaining stitches onto scrap yarn
Making Up
Sew a sleeve onto either side of the front piece along the raglan decrease. Sew the other side of the sleeves onto
the back.
Sew up the side seams between the front and the back and continue along the sleeve seam
Take all remaining stitches from the neck hole and bind off using a I-Cord bind off
Block the sweater using prefferred method
As there are no edge finishings (eg. ribbing) on the cuffs and bottom of the sweater they are goning to roll (even
if you block it). I would reconmend rolling it deliberatly about 1cm and then sewing this down so that it looks
consistent and deliberate around the bottom edges.
This is an idea I have had for a while and I finally got the courage up to practice my python and maths skills and write this out. It was a lot easier than I expected and I deliberately choose a raglan knitting pattern as I have made a few of them and it seemed the easiest to me to convert into this style. I am hopeful to expand this into other pattern types, such as set in sleeve jumpers. I also wonder at how easy it would be to adapt this pattern to add some form of texture. Keep an eye on this website and my YouTube channel for future updates.
I haven’t tested it yet (It is in my queue), but if you have a go at this then please share your results and your comments! I am sure that there are errors in my calculations or incorrect assumptions.
This was originally written in Python but was then converted into JavaScript and HTML to upload to this website.
